More general search regions

Description
Currently, the pattern search is limited to rectangles. Although wildcards can be used to do searches for regions with different shapes, this is a an imperfect work-around, from the points of efficiency as well as from the point of ease of use. So it should be possible to specify other shapes (unions of rectangles/circles etc.?/arbitrary shapes?).
